For those of you who are worried that your worth in the workplace is getting overlooked, there’s something simple and effective you can start doing on Monday morning.

First, ask yourself-

How does my boss know what I’m working on?

How does my boss know if I have too much on my plate?

Would my boss be able to tell someone else about my work?

Many people say that their boss knows about their work because they tell their boss what they’re working on during supervision or when they ask for help on a particular project.

But what about those things that you do as part of day-to-day business?

What about those projects that you don’t complain about or need extra assistance on?

What about those great relationships you have with stakeholders or colleagues that enable you to get things done at work?

The majority of people I speak to have never taken the time and effort to ensure that they promote their worth at work. And when I say promote, I don’t mean for you to conjure up an image of that guy who is always tooting his own horn in a meeting or sucking up to the boss. Instead I mean, the person (who may not exist yet in your workplace) who keeps their boss informed and gets their boss to magically toot their horn for them to colleagues and those important stakeholders.

So what’s the secret?

There are many ways to get yourself noticed at work and be appreciated for your contributions. I will share just one way.

Write an Activities Update

This is a simple document where you list all the projects you’re working, have finished, or are starting this week or month (depending on the appropriate timeline). It should be a brief memo to your boss with a bullet with a status update about each project. It’s not the place to go on at length about all the issues you’re having with a colleague or vendor. It’s just a simple, effective way to keep your boss informed, to keep your contributions front and center in your boss’ mind, and to start a conversation about ways to prioritize your workload.

So block out some this Monday to write your Activities Report- most of you will be amazed by how much you’re actually working on and how long it has been since you last took stock of your portfolio.

Below are just a few of the results I have achieved while working collaboratively with my clients*:

- A social service agency hired me to help them set up systems to track and demonstrate their successes to potential investors and attract big funding for their mission. Not only does the organization now have measurable systems to demonstrate their rate of success, they are attracting the funding they need to do the work they are here to do.

- A newly promoted executive at a Clinic needed support with making the transition from being an excellent clinician and therapist to an effective leader and administrator. After working with me, she is now comfortable in her new position of authority and has assumed this leadership role in her organization with greater confidence.

- A manager at a financial investment company felt confused as to why she was repeatedly passed over for promotions. In our assessment, we discovered a skill gap in emotional intelligence and quickly worked together to present herself in a better light, without rubbing people the wrong way. She worked on improving her interpersonal skills and now feels confident that what has held her back in the past is no longer an issue.

- A young student was falling behind in school work. In my assessment, we discovered the child was facing an emotional issue (and had been mistakenly diagnosed as a learning disability). Now his parents, teachers and school administrators know exactly how to intervene and give him the services he needs to succeed.

- A student, who was similarly diagnosed with a learning disability, we discovered was actually facing social anxiety, upon starting work with her. With help, she was able to move up a hierarchy of confidence and is now more comfortable in learning environments as a result of understanding herself better.

- A healthcare professional was devastated after failing her licensing exam twice. Both times she panicked and had trouble remembering the material she studied. After only five sessions, her anxiety level was reduced considerably. When the test day arrived, she used the techniques she learned and passed the exam.

*Identifying information has been changed or deleted to protect the confidentiality of my clients.

What Colleagues Say about Dr. Romirowsky

Developing and leading a wellness initiative for nurse anesthesia students:

“Kelly is a wonderful asset to our nurse anesthesia educational program’s faculty and student evaluations regarding her seminars have been excellent.” (Michael Kost, DNP, CRNA, Program Director of Frank J. Tornetta School of Anesthesia – La Salle School of Nursing, Montgomery Hospital)

Helping healthcare professionals and nursing students with test anxiety:

“Dr Romirowsky helped me immensely. She helped me to overcome an extremely stressful and difficult time in my life. I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone in need of stress reduction for professional/academic performance. She was a life saver for me!” (Graduate Student, Philadelphia)

“Prior to my sessions I had very bad test anxiety and as a result was unable to pass my NCLEX exam. After working with Dr. R I noticed an extreme decline in my anxiety when I went to retake my exam and b/c of this I was able to pass!” (Nursing Student, Florida)

Designing a cutting-edge data collection system for nonprofit evaluation:

“Kelly is a true visionary and leader. Over the last 2 years of working with her I witnessed her inspirational leadership as she spearheaded the development of a groundbreaking new Evaluation & Research function at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia – the depth and sophistication of which I have never seen before. Not content to sit by and accept standard, minimally insightful pre-packaged evaluation solutions and approaches, Kelly re-defined the entire process by which charitable programs are funded and evaluated. The result of these efforts has led to tremendous enhancements for these programs – improving the lives of countless people – and serving as a guiding model for other organizations to emphatically follow.” (Richard Blaustein, Analytic Solutions)

Speaking to graduate students about career opportunities:

“Kelly is an engaging speaker with deep knowledge of business psychology.” (Mathew DelGuidice, PsyD, MBA)

Working with a health psychology/business colleague:

“Kelly is a highly skilled psychotherapist and leadership coach. She is part of a small group of psychologists with the knowledge, experience and clinical skill to integrate concepts of business and psychology. She has always been committed to providing her clients with evidence- based treatments in an accepting and professional atmosphere.” (Erica Henninger, PsyD, MBA)

Establishing and running a leadership consulting firm together:

“It has been a pleasure to have known and worked with Dr. Romirowsky over the last eight years. She is a brilliant clinician and consultant. She excels at both clinical and organizational psychology and is able to balance and blend the two disciplines very well.

Dr. Romirowsky and I have worked together on leadership development initiatives (assessments and coaching), program evaluations and organizational design projects. Throughout this work, her insights always proven to be invaluable. She is extremely intelligent, hard-working, creative and compassionate. Dr. Romirowsky cares a lot about her work and her clients and helping them to succeed. I hope to work closely with her again some time in the near future.” (Andrea L Pederzani, PsyD, MBA)

Collaborating with colleagues:

“Dr. Kelly Romirowsky is energetic and motivated. She is committed to, and passionate about, her profession as a psychologist, and takes pride in her ability to assist individuals and organizations with the obstacles they face. Kelly is efficient and organized, and has always presented herself with confidence and with the utmost professionalism. My experiences with Dr. Romirowsky have shown her to be an excellent collaborator, an effective leader, and a stellar psychologist.” (Julia King, PsyD, MBA)

Consulting with non-profits:

“Dr. Romirowsky approaches her work with unwavering passion and a positive attitude. She creates an atmosphere that makes those around her feel that they are a valued and respected part of a team. Dr. Romirowsky is dedicated to finding an original solution to each new challenge faced and inspires those she works with to do the same.” (Amy Schullery, PsyD, Evaluation Analyst)

Building outcome-tracking tools:

“She is a very sharp analytical thinker and always professional.” (Wendy Clouser, Systems Analyst)
